Welcome - Shamair Turner for Ward Karhiio

I want Edmonton to be a prosperous and affordable city where people have the space to create. A city of opportunity where you can build and thrive in art, industry, culture and in your community.

The beauty of Edmonton lies in the interconnectedness of our communities and people.

We are here to support each other.

I am here to support you.

Meet Shamair

I was born and raised in Edmonton by parents from the Caribbean who built a bridge from one special place to another; my life has been enriched by both. We developed neighbourhood connections, and deep friendships.  From playing community league soccer to attending my local church - I loved growing up in Millwoods.

These places have shaped me, and I have shaped them back by investing my life in them, growing, learning, and building in relationship with them. I believe in the City of Edmonton and our ability to build a place where we can heal, connect, take care of each other, and create together.

I am an open minded, empathetic leader who is dedicated to making decisions that both support and protect Edmontonians, especially our most vulnerable. I have supported clients in the public sector, real estate, technology, holistic health, construction, and engineering fields. I am proud to have served and advised the industries that have shaped our local economy. I have managed successful projects with effective stakeholder relation skills and a goal-oriented collaborative mindset. BUT, I am not afraid to ask questions and I am not afraid to take action on difficult challenges the city may face.

The only way for us to build a thriving Edmonton is for us to work together.

Karhiio deserves a passionate advocate.

I am ready to make sure the voices of everyone are heard!

What I Stand For

A Community-informed Platform

This platform is growing and evolving through many conversations with the people of Karhiio. It represents who we can be when we come together on common ground and across difference, listen to each other, collaborate and uplift each other’s voices.

While these points are presented here in categories, I recognize that these are complex, interconnected issues that do not exist in a vacuum. The values and beliefs behind each of these points must be considered with any business brought to Council.

Economic and Environmental Prosperity

We believe that Council’s decisions should be driven by smart financial planning and climate action. Keeping these principles at the forefront will bring job opportunity, financial security, prosperity, and resilience.

Key points under this category include:

  • Small and medium business support

    • Timely and effective administrative processes, including licenses and permit applications

    • Showcasing and investing in the vibrancy of local businesses

  • Building with community benefit

    • Increasing opportunities to keep city contracts local

    • Communities see a return on investment for neighbourhood development

  • Support green energy initiatives and job creation

Accessible and Inclusive Communities

We believe that our Council and City leadership should reflect the diversity (race, ethnicity, religion, ability, gender, sexual orientation, and economic status) that’s found in Edmonton. I also believe that Council has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all , especially those who have been most marginalized and displaced throughout history.

Key points under this category include:

  • Invest in community-informed safety and wellbeing

    • Racial justice and anti-racist policy creation

    • Support for gender diversity in all spaces

    • Working together to heal and nurture right relationship with Indigenous Nations and build collaborative futures

  • Accessible transit

    • Community-informed route design

    • Affordability

    • Prioritizing needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities

  • Affordable and Permanent Supportive Housing

    • Cross-government cooperation at all levels

    • Culturally-sensitive and gender-inclusive

    • Reevaluating income cut-off levels and phased transition into market housing

Collaborative and Transparent Planning

As someone who grew up in Karhiio and understands its unique identity, I don’t want Council to make us feel like we are competing for resources and consideration. We believe if we find ways to work, live, and listen together we can build communities that are supportive of all. I will work to make sure we stick together and press city hall to serve all our neighbourhoods’ facilities and infrastructure.

Key points under this category include:

  • Long-term, sustainable, strategic infrastructure planning

  • Accountability and transparency of planning

  • Equitable investment in mature and new neighbourhoods

    • Community hubs, rec centers, malls

    • Roads, alleyways, and parks

  • Road safety

    • Making decisions based on accurate data

    • Ensuring resources are available to address noise and safety concerns
